2008 Photography Contest - Portfolio Competition

There are two judged portfolio classifications:

PROFESSIONAL
Defined as a photographer who competes in the realm of professional news photography.

STUDENT
Defined as a photographer who is enrolled full-time as a student in March 2008 and for two-thirds of the year preceding the SSC. The entering student must never have worked as a professional photographer before going to or returning to school.

A student may have full-time employment as a photographer for a maximum of one academic term of internship and must have never entered previous photographic competitions as a professional photographer. If you have any question about your eligibility, please contact the contest chair first.

PORTFOLIO RULES
Portfolio entries will be judged in private and the results kept secret until awards are announced on the last day of the Short Course. Entrants may enter, based on eligibility, either Southern Photographer of the Year or Southern Student Photographer of the Year, but NOT BOTH.

There is a maximum of TEN entries in the portfolio competition (with picture stories counting as one entry) and not exceeding 50 (FIFTY) images total. Portfolios will be judged for overall excellence and as a measure of the photographer's versatility.

A portfolio must contain:

  • Pictures from at least four (4) different single picture categories.

  • At least one multiple picture entry (News, Feature or Sports Picture Story or Essay)

  • At least one entry from categories 1 (Spot News), 2 (General News) or 10 (News Picture Story).

  • Do not include multimedia as a part of your portfolio.

Photographers entering one of the Portfolio contests should place all the photos in their Portfolio entry in a folder marked with Portfolio category and photographer's code (i.e., "Portfolio nrblx" or "Student Portfolio nrblx"). Category entries will be judged separately from Portfolio entries so you must make copies of the category entries you wish to be considered in your portfolio entry.

IMPORTANT: Do not include hard copies of captions for portfolio entries. But remember, as with story entries in the individual category competition, story summaries must be included in "File Info" of the first image of any story entry.
